Supporting Healthy Weight Management in the Mid-South

Obesity in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. More than 60 percent of the country’s population weighs more than they should for a healthy lifestyle. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):

  • Between 30 and 35 percent of adults in Arkansas and Tennessee are obese
  • More than 35 percent of adults in Mississippi are obese

This is a serious concern for our communities, because being overweight and obese are known risk factors for serious conditions such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Deterioration of cartilage and joints
  • Sleep apnea
  • Some forms of cancer

To help address this epidemic, Baptist offers both surgical and non-surgical options for weight loss.

What are my weight loss options?

We have several weight loss locations in Mississippi and Tennessee, which offer non-surgical and surgical options to help individuals who are overweight or obese. Body mass index (BMI) is a weight to height ratio that is used to determine whether someone is:

  • Overweight – BMI of 25.0 to 29.9
  • Obese – BMI of 30+

Where does your body mass index fall? Find out by using the CDC’s Adult BMI Calculator.

Knowing your BMI is important, because it is a factor that’s considered when deciding which method of weight loss is the best choice. The two main methods of weight loss at Baptist include:

Healthy Lifestyle Changes

Making lifestyle changes is an effective form of weight loss for many people who are overweight or obese. These changes are also imperative for those who choose to undergo surgery. To support these efforts, we offer programs that help individuals eat healthy, exercise more, learn about healthy living and commit to their newly formed-habits.

Weight Loss Surgery

For some people, lifestyle changes alone are not enough to achieve their ideal weight and improve their health. In this case, our bariatric surgeons are available to perform one of the following procedures:

  • Lap Band® surgery
  • Gastric bypass surgery
  • Gastric sleeve surgery
