Transplant Program

About Our Transplant Program

Transplant Program TeamThe Baptist Heart Institute, part of Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, was the first to establish an adult heart transplant program in the Mid-South and remains the only adult heart transplant program in the Mid-South area today.

Baptist physicians completed the area's first open heart surgery in 1960 and the first heart transplant in 1985. Dr. H. Edward Garrett, Jr., the transplant program's director, performed the area's first heart-lung and double lung transplant in 1991. As of September 2016, Baptist physicians have performed more than 360 heart transplants.

Our team of transplant specialists uses a multidisciplinary support system to integrate every aspect of a patient's care before, during and following the transplant procedure.

All the needs of the patient and their families are met through the close collaboration of our physicians, nurses and transplant coordinators. At Baptist a strong emphasis is placed on family involvement, quality-of-life issues, and the cost-effective delivery of care throughout the transplant process

The Lung Transplant Program at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis is currently inactive. For more information, contact Jane Thayer at 901-226-2199.
